September 2008 - The day I received my first fountain pen! It was given to me by a very good friend of mine during someone else's wedding (of all things). Very shortly after I purchased my first bottle of Noodlers Ink (Luxury Blue to be exact) and the addiction started! I've never turned back since. I thought I'd start an interesting little discussion. A sort of show-and-tell! I've posted the story of my first fountain pen and I've got pictures coming up. I'd love to hear your story and especially love to see a picture! Please, do me the favor of posting a comment sharing
your story!
This is my first: A Chinese made pen that looks more expensive than it is. The brand in Naki/S.Z. LEQUI (Chinese and French?!?). It's still an excellent writer!

I still have the Parker 45 I bought as a teenager in the late 50's early 60's. I got away from fountain pens for some time but never really lost my appreciation of them. Now that I'm retired and can indulge a hobby or two, I started buying various reasonably priced new and vintage pens. While setting them up on my desk, I was pretty sure still had that original pen because I just wouldn't toss something like that. Sure enough, I found it. Much to my amazement and delight, it still writes and is currently filled with Noodler's Antietam.

Hello dcpritch! Good to hear from you!
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting and neat story you have. Looks like you started out at the high end of fountain pens. Many folks I know started out with something really cheap so it's interesting to hear from someone with a different experience.
I too am still using my first fountain pen to this very day!

Cool story Freddy! Glad you found your first pen again. That's a very nice looking Parker 45. Love the color of the pen matched with the ink. Nice handwriting too!

I posted a similar comment on another pen blog, so please excuse my self-plagiarism but I love reading about people's first fountain pens :)
ReplyDeleteMy first fountain pen was (and I still have it) a red Sheaffer “NoNonsense”
pen that I bought at a Woolworths department store in northern Canada in 1976. It came with a pack of Sheaffer cartridges and I used it in late elementary school to write short essays and reports
as I wanted a “special pen” for “special” homework. I think fountain
pens still have that sort of aura about them—that they are “special” in
some way. Goodness knows I probably used ballpoint pens that were
almost as expensive as my NoNonsense fountain pen, but I thought of my
fountain pen as something “special”….and I still do
How cool is that! You bought an original Sheaffer No-Nonsense in a store!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had a story like that... :)
Thanks for sharing!

You're welcome! I have over 50 different NoNonsense pens in various colours and designs (including stainless steel and the ones that resemble chased hard rubber). They are a great "first pen" and can be easily found on eBay.
