Free fountain pen giveaway! Don't miss out on this one!

Here's a deal you don't want to miss out on! I'm going to be giving away a free fountain pen. But not just any pen... This pen will be sporting a 777 Pen Repair custom grind! The grind on this pen is one of my smooth, buttery, crisp cursive italics! You don't want to miss out on this opportunity to try out one of my CI grinds for absolutely free. The nib comes attached to an awesome Jinhao 500 fountain pen. These heavy-weight Chinese-made pens are of superb quality and are really fun to use. This pen is a c/c filler and comes with a converter included. It also comes with a soft felt "gift-pouch". This pen with the grind is worth over $45.00, but it could be yours for nothing!

By now you're probably asking "how do I get it!?!". Well I'll tell you!

First, just to get you drooling, take a look at these pictures! This is what's up for grabs:

All you need to do to win is simply post a comment in this thread. The comment must give a name (a username is fine) and tell what ink you will use first in the pen. The comments will be numbered by the order they're posted in. Example: the first comment is #1, the second comment is #2, and so on...

I'm sure you're wondering "alright Tyler, what's the catch?". Yes, there's a "catch" so to speak for everything, but I think you'll find this one quite appealing! You'll notice I've given no date for the end of this giveaway. That's for a reason. Here's why: This pen will not be going anywhere until I've gotten 100 new subscribers (old ones don't count, sorry... ) to my blog via feedburner. Here's how it works. You do not have to subscribe to win. Subscribing however, is your incentive! You won't have any chance of getting the pen unless I get the 100 new subscribers. So  then, here's what you're going to want to do:

  1. If you haven't already, subscribe to my blog right now. That's 1 subscription closer to the goal! If you don't know what subscribing is via-RSS then take a look at this post I did on it. It'll give you a run down of what RSS is and how it works.
  2. Tell a friend or two about this give-away. Let them know about it so they can participate.
  3. Post a link to this giveaway on your own blog if you've got one. This will help spread the word.
Now you've got your incentive. This is a good incentive because it's not mandatory for entering the give-away. Just remember that the pens not going anywhere until I've gotten 100 new subscriptions!

I suppose you're wondering also "why would I want to subscribe?". Well, lots of reasons! Here's just a few of them:

  1. Keep on top of the latest news - Subscribing will keep you updated so you can be first to get there for all my future give-aways.
  2. Manage your favorite content better - Subscribing will help you keep track of all the new content I put out.
  3. It's free - no strings attached - What can you say to that! Subscribing costs you nothing and can only benefit you! All you need is an account with Google or any other subscribing platform.

Regards,
777 - Tyler Dahl

  1. I love the graph checkerboard - neat looking pen. I will fill with Di. Majestic Blue if I win the pen, as I love that in an italic pen. I've added you to my reader and look forward to checking out past posts. Great marketing technique BTW.

  2. Hello Gini,

Looks like you're #1 in this giveaway! It's good to have you here.

Diamine Majestic blue looks like a very nice shade of ink. I've never tried it myself but the reviews I've seen are very positive. I love that reddish sheen on the top of the dried ink. Looks very good. :)

I hope you enjoy reading through my previous and new posts. I've got a ton of good content out there just waiting to be discovered.

  3. Hmmm...  I keep trying to buy Jinhao pens, they look great, but write terrible.  I would love to try one that has actually been worked on by someone with more knowledge.  I am thinking that pen is calling for Noodler's Black.

  4. Very nice Tyler. Good to see this Jinhao isn't throwing any fits.  I've got a few Jinhao's and it's hit and miss when it comes to ink reliable flow. I would use Namiki/Pilot Blue in this pen. I always use a very well behaved ink in a new pen. Once we get to know each other - then we move on to more exotic stuff. Regards, David in Jakarta

  5. Tyler, what a great give away.  I think that pen calls out for an ink with a strong red-purple like Diamine Syrah.  It will be fun to see how this goes.  All the best to you.

  8. Tyler, I've never heard of this brand before, so something new to add to the collection would be welcome. That bold patterning calls for a bold color, Noodler's Nightshade; dark, dramatic, desirable..... Thanks

  9. Became a subscriber months ago, when I first happened across your blog.
And became a very happy customer, as well, shortly thereafter.
    But count me in !

In my Esterbrook LJ in Copper, I love the vintage look of J. Herbin's
"Cafe des Iles"...    sort of a soft coffee brown.

  10. Yes, with this Jinhao you're assured of a very nice writing experience!

    You're #2 J.T.! It's good to have you here.

  11. Hey David, good to see you here. You will be #3 in this fun give-away!

I've never tried one of the Namiki inks but they sounds nice. It is indeed good to start with a well behaved ink in a new pen. I'd better go and find a review of Namiki Blue so I can see what it's like!

  15. Hello Karen, you're #6!

Jinhao's (as far as Chinese-made pens go) are one of the top brands. Still, many people haven't heard of them. When purchased from a nibmeister where you're assured they write well, they are great pens. Value for dollar they are excellent as well.

Noodlers Nightshade, looks like I'm off to go find another review. :) I enjoy looking up new (to me) inks.

So you've never tried any noodlers before? Well, this would indeed be a good oportunity to get some. :)

They've got to many colors for me to recommend just one but I would go and check out Gouletpens.com They've got every noodler ink (and other brnads) swabed on paper so you can look at and compare them. Very handy to have!

Since I didn't post on your CI grinding video, I'll comment on it here. Fantastic video, and it's inspired me to try it, for fun, and because I'll be rather free once exams end. My cheap Hero 616s will be sacrificed...

I'm starting to get back into fountain pens after about a six year hiatus and just found your blog. I'm really loving the content and love the cleanness of the look of your blog too. Can't wait to delve in a bit more.

What a nice pen! Ink...hmmmm....lately red/burgundy/black cherry appeals to me like so many others and I've got some Private Reserve Black Cherry heading my way since I'm having trouble finding Noodler's Black Swan in English Roses and have always loved PR..

Don't know if you have already but you should check out gouletpens.com. They're an awesome home-run business that sells pens, inks, paper, and does lots of cool reviews and videos. They may have Noodlers Black Swan in English Roses.

If I won this, it would be my very first fountain pen.
    My username is racheldevin.
I think for an ink I would use one of my brother's custom-made inks, probably a pure purple one he made. He is very much into fountain pens, and does a really great job of repairing and restoring them. He's the one trying to get me interested in them. :)
By the way, your blog is really fantastic. And thank you again for linking to my website! I really appreciate it!

    Iroshizuku inks are great.

A, your first "big-nib"! Let me tell you it's a dangerous road. :) It involves a lot of money... :( And a lot of fun! I switched form XF and F's to a monster 1.3mm stub (a BB)! I love my big nibs! I do still keep a small nib inked up for those tasks which need that sort of thing...

Thanks for subscribing, it helps. It will also help you greatly. I hope you will enjoy the future content I put out. :)

  95. Hello there, looks like you're #45!

I've heard that waterman blue-black is a good "safe" ink. Meaning it doesn't stain, clog, or do any other weird things. Sounds nice.Regards,777 - Tyler Dahl

  98. My favourites: Pelikan Turquoise or Puple, never could decide which I like better.

  99. Hi Connor, good to have you here! :) #47 you are.

  101. If I were to win this pen - and I truly hope I do - I think my first ink would be Private Reserve Midnight Blues.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Hello there, you're #49! Good username, if I may say so. :)

PR Midnight Blue. I think I had a bottle of that a loooong time ago... I can hardly remember what it even looked like.Regards,777 - Tyler Dahl

  103. Well...I am probably far too late to win this great pen. But am interested in learning more about repairing nibs & pens. It looks like you have made this Jinhao nib into something really specail. Well done!

So this looks like a good place to seek advice, Tyler.

And as for the lovely chekerboard pen, well, I'll dream of winning it. After all, penguins CAN fly can't they?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Hi Tyler,
Love the blog and the YouTube videos!
The first ink I think I would probably use in the Jinhao is Pilot's Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo ink;it's a beautiful color and such a well-behaved ink. You did a nice job of customizing the nib and I think it deserves a nice ink :)

    ReplyDelete
  105. Hello there, you're #50! Good to have you here.

I just got a sample bottle of Tsuki-Yo a few weeks ago. Very nice color.

  106. Hi there, Tyler,

I'm a brand new visitor to your blog--I clicked the link on your signature from FPN. I don't even know what subscribing to a blog means, but I will try to do it--I looked through the first few posts and this looks like a helpful and fun site.

I would ink this pen up with Noodler's Navajo Turquoise first, I think. Any sort of italic always makes me want to reach for inks with some real shading.

I've used Jinhaos normal-as-they-come in the past. I really like them: I'd love to know how it feels and performs with any italic grind.

Thanks, and nice to meet you.
    Matthew Newell

  107. Hello Matthew! It's always good to have new visitors. :)

Subscribing is super easy. You simply click on the big "RSS" button (the orange squarer with two lines and a dot in it) and it'll take you to my feed. Then you can subscribe via a reader, or even easier by email. You just click on whichever method you with to subscribe by.

Noodlers Navajo Turquoise was my second ink. I think it's a great color!

Good to meet you, and I hope you're able to gain much useful information from my site. :)

  119. Diamine "Blaze Orange" is a super cool bright color, any time of the year. Especially dramatic with a cursive italic nib. I want that pen!

Remember though you need to be sure your pen is perfectly clean before using this ink. It just is not the same if there is any contamination.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I am curious if you (or if it can be done) can grind a rhodium plated nib from an M to an EF? I just purchased a Plelikan Indian Summer but it only came in an M size nib. If I were to win the free grinding, this may be the one I chose to have done. Nice blog you have.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Hey Dan! You're #55!

Yes, if you win I can grind your nib down a size. :)Regards,777 - Tyler Dahl

  126. Wow.  I love fountain pens and have only just found your blog.  I subscribed, but didn't know there was such an array of ink out there.  I am still using a bog standard bottle of Quink Ink as that's what my dad always used.  I'm sure there's much better out there now so any recommendations would be great.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Hey Katherine, just a suggestion, but if you haven't gone to the site gouletpens.com then I highly recommend it.  It is run by a husband and wife team who offer terrific service as well as a wide selection of inks.  In fact, you will be awed at what they carry in inks and, if you don't want to order a full bottle of a particular color, they offer the option of ordering a small sample of any ink they have for a nominal price.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Just ordered Pilot Kon-peki so most likely thats what going in if I won. Outside of Sailor and Pilot I'm not very familiar with other asian FP brands... didn't know they had good designs...

    ReplyDelete
  129. Hello Katherine! You're #63! Good to have you here. :)

Ink suggestions, let me give you a few of my favorites:

    - Noodlers Cayenne (a beautiful red with orange undertones. Looks just like a cayenne pepper)

    - Private Reserve Sherwood Green (a deep, rich, and lush green. My favorite so far)

    - Iroshizuku Kon-Peki (this inks a little expensive but it is great ink. I was given a bottle but I normally wouldn't buy it)

    - Noodlers Navajo Turquoise (a lovely, semi-bright, blue-turquoise color)

These are just the ones I like out of the ones I've tried. I actually haen't tried that many inks.

Like Freddy said, check out gouletpens.com. They have ink swabs of almost every ink ever made! It's a really useful tool for comparing and buying new inks. You could get a bunch of sample bottles, pick you fav's, and then go order the real bottles.

    Hope this helps. :)

    Regards,
    777 - Tyler Dahl

  130. Hey there! You're #64! Good to have you.

Good ink choice. If I could afford it I would always have Kon-Peki as my standard blue ink. Sadly since the price jump I've just been using 1 bottle that was gifted to me by a friend. Once that runs out I'll be looking for substitute colors.

Yea, I think these Jinhaos are nice looking pens. Some of there other designs are even more nice than this one!

  137. Looks like a nice pen. I see that it used to have a ball of tipping material which was ground away what tools do you use to get such an even surface? If I had this pen I would probably use some Pelikan Royal Blue, as I like the colour and how well behaved it is.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Hello! You're #68!

As far as grinding. I begin with a high-speed rotary tool and then proceed to extremely fine grades of sandpaper finishing with micro-mesh and mylar.

I've heard good things about Pelikan Royal Blue. A good choice. :)

  151. Good looking pen you've got there. I think it's begging to be filled with Noodler's Red-Black and I'd I win it, that's exactly what's going in.

    Cheers,

  152. The ones I use most frequently are a pair of Pilot Plumixes partly because I love the italic nib and partly because of the design and smoothness of the pens.  Found an unidentified Parker at a Tuesday Morning and a Sheaffer calligraphy set at a craft store while visiting relatives.  Recently I got a Platinum Plaisir, a Pilot Petit1 Mini, and an Ohto Rook from JetPens.  The Rook actually skips more over nice paper, but it works just fine at work on receipt paper and Post-It notes.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Nice Jinhao! I'd put Diamine Steel Blue in it.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Hello Jessica! We've got #75 with you now.

    ReplyDelete
  155. So I'm intrigued! Have never had the good fortune to use a custom nib, but I have used Jinhao pens, and they do have a nice heft to them.

I would use Noodler's Bulletproof Black in it first. It's a reliable ink, I've used it for years so can weed out its behavior from the nib's own qualities, and, well in truth I work in healthcare and they frown on my prettier choices.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Hello! You're #76. Good to have you with us.

A very nice ink choice. This ink is next on my to-buy list. It looks like a really great, well behaved black.

To bad your work doesn't let you use "prettier" inks. I've always been home-schooled so I was allowed to use any ink color I wanted too. :)

    ReplyDelete
  159. Apache Sunset is by Noodler and is my favorite color. I think the shading would look great with that nib.

  160. I would use Noodler's Heart of Darkness. Smooth, chic, and lasting, like I hope the pen would be.

Good ink choice! I've been wanting to try that ink for while. I'm thinking of throwing in a sample of it with my next Gouletpens.com order.

Nice ink choice. This ink was in close competition when I was deciding on a black ink. I ended up choosing Noodlers black for two reasons:
    - It was cheaper
    - I heard it behaved better. I'm not sure if that's exactly true though.

Interesting ink choice. I've never been to interested in Aurora inks (I didn't even know they existed 6 months ago...) but the Aurora Black seems like a really nice color. I heard it's one of the darkest black-inks ever made.

Glad you like the reviews! I enjoy making them. :)
