Bamboo Dip Pen!

My brother recently made me this strange little writing instrument. It's a dip pen alright but it has nothing to do with feathers or metal nibs. Instead, it's made of 100% bamboo. When I first heard of the idea I thought it would be somewhat of a joke. The sort of thing that "kind of" worked sometimes. Boy was I wrong! These bamboo dip pens are amazing! They work way better than a feather pen or even a steel nibbed dip pen (at least the cheap ones I've used).  the results were so amazing that I just had to do a post one them.

Check this out! That whole paragraph of text was written with one dip from this bamboo dip pen! Now that's an incredible feat!

Not to bad of fading either. It's writes generally the same color except for the last few lines.

A close up of the bottom of the pen. No to complex!

A close up of the top of the "nib".

It lays down a broad wet line. Not to wet though, and the line size could be custom cut to whatever you want!

Hope you enjoyed this! I may end up posting a how to tutorial so you can make your own!

  2. Glad you like it! No there is no breathing hole or slit. It's as simple as just cutting the nib shape!

I'll try and get a tutorial up when I have the time. As far as a substitute for bamboo, I don't know. The bamboo works so well because it's already hollow. Let me think about that and see what I can come up with.

  3. That's very cool. What ink are you using? And how many words/lines can you write with one dip?

  4. Hello PininKcillin! The ink I'm using is Noodlers Navajo Turquoise. I dilute mine with 50% water. Yes, that's right, 50%. I like the result and it stretches the ink really far!

As far as how many lines: That whole paragraph of text you see in the photos is just one dip! That's approx. 7 lines on a standard collage ruled notebook! Pretty nice for a dip pen!

  8. A tutorial on this, as well as a feather dipper, would be great. How smoothly do they write. I have always wanted to try making and using a feather dip pen but I always imagined that they would be extremely scratchy writers. This looks like an interesting alternative.
