Bamboo dip pen nib holder. A prototype design.

Well, after making that 100% bamboo dip pen (see the Blog entry just before this one) I decided to do a version of it that used a metal nib. That way you could change out nibs to whatever you like. After doing this the results were so nice that (as usually happens!) I just had to do a post on them!

So then I decided to take it to you all and ask what changes you might make to the design. This is prototype #1 and I already have a few changes to make but I'd love to have your input on it! I'd love to compile community feedback and make this into a community designed pen!

Here's what changes I've got so far.

 - Get rid of the screw in  the bottom  It's just there to hold in a piece that doesn't really need to be there.
- Do without the cap. After all, it's just a dip pen

What do you all think of this? Please, post a comment with you might like to see in this pen. I have a ready supply of bamboo so I can make quite a few prototypes before coming to a final design.

Here are the pictures!

Here are some pictures of it on a new little pen rest I made. I'll be doing a post of that soon!

Bamboo Dip Pen!

My brother recently made me this strange little writing instrument. It's a dip pen alright but it has nothing to do with feathers or metal nibs. Instead, it's made of 100% bamboo. When I first heard of the idea I thought it would be somewhat of a joke. The sort of thing that "kind of" worked sometimes. Boy was I wrong! These bamboo dip pens are amazing! They work way better than a feather pen or even a steel nibbed dip pen (at least the cheap ones I've used).  the results were so amazing that I just had to do a post one them.

Check this out! That whole paragraph of text was written with one dip from this bamboo dip pen! Now that's an incredible feat!

Not to bad of fading either. It's writes generally the same color except for the last few lines.

A close up of the bottom of the pen. No to complex!

A close up of the top of the "nib".

It lays down a broad wet line. Not to wet though, and the line size could be custom cut to whatever you want!

Hope you enjoyed this! I may end up posting a how to tutorial so you can make your own!

The biggest stub nib ever!?!?

Well not quite. But it does lay down a huge line! Can you guess what it is?

Well, I had the day off of work today and thought I might mess around with an idea I had. A paint brush stub! It acts the same way as a fountain pen nib. Using a shaped tip to provide line variation. If you don't know what a stub nib is, this is a great example of one. The sideways strokes are thin, while the up and down strokes are wide. This is basically the easy way to get line variation as opposed to a flex nib.

So here it is, a huge paint brush stub "nib". This thing laid down a massive wet line. It was a lot of fun to use, but one could run through a bottle of ink very quickly doing this!

As always, just click on the picture for an enlarged super-view of it.

Compared next to my hand! Wow, that's big!
