Homemade Pen Stand

So, I thought I'd share another homemade creation of mine. I was inspired to do this when I saw a very expensive Japanese pen stand. They were about $50.00+ a piece... I thought I'd try and make my own for free. Mine comes nowhere close to the one I was inspired by but it sure does work.

Here are some pictures:

It's made of solid oak - Very sturdy little thing!

As you can see, not the prettiest thing in the world but very functional.

  1. Tyler, while yours is excellent, I've never understood making those stands.  Why not just use a chopstick stand.  Many are extremely attractive and wouldn't they serve the same purpose?

  2. Well, I can only speak for myself but the reason I like these stands is for desk use. When in the middle of writing a letter, when I set my pen down for a minute, this stand keeps it from rolling around. It also looks elegant for desktop displays and such. Mainly it's just personal preference though! I like most stands, this was just easiest to make!

  3. Hi Tyler,

Nice job. But I worry that stock off-the-shelf woods these days are pressure treated with all kinds of nasty chemicals that may attack the surface of pen materials over time (yeah - maybe I worry too much.)

What I've been thinking about is making a custom pen stand for the desktop and/or photography in 3D software and sending the design to a 3D fabricator, like Shapeways (Google knows, there are many others). Shapeways (I'm not affiliated) offers various plastic composites for fabrication in various colors and finishes - as well as stainless steel and aluminum. Recently they started offering fired ceramic as a build material (ideal for a pen stand!)

Once you are satisfied with your pen-stand design, the likes of Shapeways will allow you to post your design as open to the community or in their store where they will fabricate it, ship it to anyone, and pay you some profit (after they take a taste of-course).

I'm thinking about an artful 3D pen-holder design that holds the pen at around 45 degrees and has an extended "footer" type extension that is a shallow bowl if-you-will to catch any ink that may leak. Good for photos and good for letting a pen sit to see if it leaks after restoration. Hmmm...

  4. Sounds like an interesting idea you've got there...

This pen stand is made from wood that was cut by a local saw-mill. No chemicals, no nastiness, just good oak wood!

I'd love to see your design!
